Dear children, let’s find out who is the true friend of a Cow?

Ubqari Magazine - February 2014

[Muhammad Hassan; Lahore]

Quite some time ago, ‘cow’ lived amongst its fellow animals and was close friends with the female lion of the jungle. Both cow and lioness had children who played amongst themselves and were close friends too like their mothers.

The cow’s offspring was very obedient and always listened to his mother while that of the lioness was carefree and never paid attention to his mother’s sayings. Once the lioness had to go for a journey, its cub could not move fast so she left him in the cow’s custody while she ran some errands. After she had left, cow allowed the cub and her own offspring to go out and play on the condition that they would not play near the well since they could die upon falling. However, when they both went out, the cub disobeyed as usual and while playing near the well, fell to his death. The cow’s child ran back to his mother to tell the whole story swearing that it wasn’t his fault. After his mother listened to it she quickly decided to run away before the lioness returned since the lioness would never believe the story but instead would hurt them. And so after running hard both the cow and her offspring finally decided to take some rest and shelter and upon looking around they found a giraffe that listened to their dilemma and allowed them shelter with the promise that he would not force them to move out when the lioness came. But the giraffe soon took back his word out of fear and forced them to leave once the lioness came after them.

Once again, they started their long and tiring journey on foot and when they got tired once again, they found a Buffalo who listened to their story and also gave shelter to them like the giraffe, saying that she would make the lioness run away. But before they could settle down, the lioness came again and the buffalo forced them to leave too. Poor cow once again started to look around for a true friend. Upon finding an elephant, she decided to trust him but he too proved himself cowardly and forced them to leave when he saw the lioness approaching.

Running hard, both the cow and its offspring found themselves in the fields and saw a sparrow who listened to their story and offered to help saying that she was courageous than she looked. With a plan in mind the sparrow asked the cow to give her some milk while she found the flower of banana and when she mixed the two together the milk turned all red. When the lioness finally caught up with them the sparrow pierced her claws into the lioness‘s eyes. The lioness got angry and tried to open her eyes. The sparrow taunted that the lioness could now feel the blood dripping down her eyes and with saying that she poured the red milk over her eyes. The sparrow threw the red flower in front of the lioness taunting again that her heart had been taken out. Upon seeing the lioness got really scared and ran away with much haste. To this day both cow and sparrow are good friends and are often seen together.
