If anyone is in doubt about any matter and is indecisive about whether he should take a certain step or not, he should perform Istikhara as following. By the Grace of Allah Almighty, he will be guided very clearly towards adopting or abandoning the matter in his mind or he will be directed in his dreams about it to choose the best course of action. E.g. seeing green colour, green cloth, green fields or a green meadow depict positive sign while flood, storms or pitch darkness or scene of a battle or fire points towards prohibition from the proposed decision as it may lead to loss. The method of Istikhara is as follows:

After offering Isha prayer, offer two cycles of prayer before going to bed with the intention of Istikhara. Then recite durood 11 times and recite these words 100 times 

then recite the durood 11 times again and go to sleep without speaking to anyone facing Qibla while keeping his hand under his head. This posture will be adopted in the beginning and is not restricted while in the sleep. This has to be repeated 3 or 7 days but if he gets guidance in the first night, then he does not need to continue.
